Sydney Roosters prop Jason Ryles is confident the added weight of expectation on playmaker Todd Carney will have no affect on his performance in Saturday night's crucial qualifying final against the Wests Tigers.
Carney has had an astonishing comeback in the NRL this season capped by his Dally M medal triumph.
But a new challenge begins for the crafty five-eighth at the SFS as he looks to lead the Roosters past the Tigers and then on towards the title.
It's a big ask for someone aged just 24 and with only one previous finals appearance under his belt. But Ryles believes Carney can put the expectation to one side and flourish.
"I don't know if there could be any more pressure on him," Ryles said.
"He's going to take a lot of confidence out of winning the medal."
"He's done well to turn his life around, everyone's heard the story 50 times."
"I think it's just more of a relief to get that out of the way and get on with playing footy."
"I can see he's got a bit of a bounce in his step at training which is good for him and good for our team."
And it could also spell disaster for the Tigers.
While Carney possesses the brilliance to take control over a match, Ryles is well aware it's up to the forwards to lay the platform to give the No.6 and halves partner Mitchell Pearce the space to work their magic.
"We definitely need to get forward for those guys," he said.
"It's going to be a big battle in first 15-20 minutes especially, and whoever gets that ascendancy (in the forwards) will provide a bit more attacking spark for (their halves)."
The match-up between Carney and Tigers superstar Benji Marshall is a mouth-watering prospect for an expected 35,000 fans but Tigers coach Tim Sheens said it would be foolish to think either side could win on the back of the two pivots alone.
"They'll both influence the game in some way but there's some other pretty good players out there," Sheens said.
"I don't think you can worry about one player on either side for that matter."
"You don't get to this situation without having a fairly good side."
