Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Hopper says he still confused about the correct interpretation of the controversial 10-metre protected area rule.
Hopper conceded a 50-metre penalty for encroaching in the protected zone during Saturday night’s win over Hawthorn at Spotless Stadium, in a match that was seemingly over adjudicated by the umpires.
The Giants youngster admits he was frustrated at the severity of the punishment for the indiscretion, especially in what was such a tight contest.

“It’s a tough one, it’s just that confusion around what do to and what not to do, which is unfortunate,” Hopper told SEN Mornings.
“I think they're through the process of figuring it out and hopefully it gets resolved, so it’s a bit clearer for the players, and it’s not as costly because it obviously led to a goal on the weekend which is unfortunate.
“I think it’s as long as you are showing intent to get out (of the protected zone) and it’s obvious, you should be safe.
“There was certain levels of frustration because I was obviously next to the boundary so I didn’t really know where to go, I wasn’t going to run out of play that’s for sure, I wanted to stay on the ground.
“Hopefully there’s no more one’s paid like that.”
The rule continues to confuse players, with Melbourne defender Michael Hibbard also venting his frustration at the implementation of the ruling.
Hopper and the GWS will look to make it five in a row when they meet West Coast at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
