Suns coach confirms interest in out-of-contract Geelong midfielder

2018-09-11T12:55+10:00

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew has confirmed the club are interested in signing out-of-contract Geelong midfielder George Horlin-Smith.

Horlin-Smith was limited to just four senior games in 2018 with his last game coming back in Round 9 against Essendon.

Dew was full of admiration for the 25-year-old, who understands the unrestricted free agent's desire for regular opportunities at AFL level.

“We’re obviously interested (in Horlin-Smith),” Dew told SEN’s Whateley.

“We know he has come from a good system, he’s durable, he’s a pro and he might be looking for a greater opportunity.

“We went down the path with Aaron Young last year and Nick Holman, and they were able to play 22 games and be really good role models for our football club.

“The character piece is important for us and those guys on their second or last chance can make a really good career and want to drive the club forward.

“That’s important for us, making sure that Gold Coast is their club, it’s not a pit stop to somewhere else.”

Another player who has been linked with a move to the Suns is Richmond’s Anthony Miles, but Dew was coy on whether or not they will make a play for the Tigers midfielder.

“He (Miles) can certainly play AFL footy,” Dew said.

“He’ll be one talked about in the next month, where he sees himself and where it fits we aren’t sure.

“But again, from all reports, he’s of good character and certainly comes from another good system.”
