Buckley’s holiday “inspired” says AFL Coaches CEO

AFL Coaches Association CEO Mark Brayshaw has praised Nathan Buckley’s decision to take a three-month holiday.

The Collingwood coach has taken the unusual step of removing himself from the football bubble for a prolonged period of time, jetting off to Italy, in a move Brayshaw thinks will help revitalise Buckley.

“It’s taken everybody by surprise but I think it is absolutely inspired and there’s all sorts of dimensions to this,” Brayshaw told SEN Breakfast.

“In amongst it all, Nathan has eight, nine, maybe even 10, really capable assistants. One of the arts of good leadership in any business is to be able to identify good people underneath, delegate, get out of the way and get them to do it.

“I have no doubt he is comfortable the ship is in good hands while he is away.

“I’ve been around footy for a little while and thought I knew a bit about coaching but the stress these blokes and their families are under is enormous, so I think it will be a terrific exercise for him and the club to get his head clear and fresh.”

Buckley led the Magpies to this year's Grand Final, where they fell short by five-points to West Coast.
