Muhammad Ali dead at 74

2016-06-04T14:45:51Z

Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers of all time, has passed away aged 74.

Ali had been admitted to hospital in Phoenix, Arizona earlier this week following respiratory complications due to his long 32-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.

After initial reports said that Ali's condition was "fair", the champion boxer's condition deteriorated rapidly before eventually Ali passed away in the late hours of June 3 in the United States.

The heavyweight boxer, who has famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest", was born as Cassius Clay in Loiusville, Kentucky in 1942, before converting to Islam and changing his name to Muhammad Ali in 1964.

He came to fame for a number of historic boxing matches, most particularly his first fight against Sonny Liston, three bouts against his greatest rival Joe Frazier, including the "Thrilla in Manilla" in 1975 that is often regarded as the greatest boxing match of all time, and "The Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman in 1974.

The fight against Foreman was where Ali regained the World Heavyweight Championship seven years after being stripped of the title due to refusing to be conscripted into the US Army for the Vietnam War.

This anti-war message, combined with Ali's heroics in the ring, made him a youth icon in the 1960's and 1970's and cemented himself as a legend that even people today are inspired by.

Ali continued to remain in the public eye for two decades following his diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease in 1984, with his last major public appearance coming as an Olympic flag bearer at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

He had previously been admitted to hospital two times in the years between his final public appearance and his death.
