Isaac Smith no chance of Gold Coast move: Wallace

2016-10-05T08:36+11:00

Terry Wallace has poured cold water on the possibility of Isaac Smith joining Gold Coast in order to facilitate a trade for Jaeger O'Meara.

Reports on social media have suggested the Suns have inquired about Smith in their hunt to add experienced players to their list.

“I’ve actually spoken to him about this, I work with him one night a week on radio and when the Luke Bruest scenario came up I sort of said what happens if it had have been your name?” Wallace said on SEN Breakfast.

“It was something along the lines of no way known would I ever finish up, up there. So I doubt very much that would be happening.

“Clubs will throw up any name when they have the ability to do so, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work that way.”

Smith has two years remaining on his contract at the Hawks and Wallace says the only way Smith would possibly want to join is if Gold Coast offer a Gary Ablett-esque contract offer.

“When you’re talking about contracted players it’s got to be an agreement that suits the club and suits the player.

“Straight away we don’t know if it suits the Hawthorn Football Club to be letting Isaac Smith go, or whether they would even contemplate it.

“We actually know this time around that the player wouldn’t contemplate it.

“It would need a hail mary from the Gold Coast to throw Gary Ablett-like numbers at him to convince him that he would be going up there.”

He believes Hawthorn will need to get a third party involved to secure O’Meara.

“That’s why I keep sort of sitting back saying there needs to be a third party here, whether it’s a Port Adelaide and (Hamish) Hartlett that’s prepared to go,” said Wallace.
