Ian Healy: Too many coaches have little impact

2016-11-18T08:30+11:00

There are far too many coaches intimately involved in the Australian cricket team that are clearly not proving they are all required given the side’s extended poor run of form, says Ian Healy.

Recently it was the chief selector Rod Marsh that stood down from his position following the fifth consecutive Test loss, but the former star wicketkeeper would like to see further changes.

“Those that are in there, I think there’s too many around the Australian cricket team,” said Healy on SEN radio.

“We need to get them down producing talent in the under 14s, 15s and 16s feeding it to states and the Australian cricket team run by a coach and an assistant coach – that’ll do me.

“Totally over serviced and we can now see they don’t have any impact.”

The team’s form has fallen away drastically in recent times but many critics and former players have claimed that eventually such results were going to be expected.

“How quickly has it come, it’s like the cracks have been blown open with one bad afternoon in Perth,” said Healy.

“You know we were ahead of South Africa on day two in Perth and about four or five days later we’re on the absolute scrapheap.

“Yes, when David Warner doesn’t do something and stand up at the top of the order we’re in a bit of trouble.

“In recent history all our centurions have been on their own, we never stack up a really strong convincing batting team performance.”

Furthermore, the debate continues as to why a number of elite bowlers on the fringe of the national team continue to break down with serious injuries.

“There’s nothing obvious (to change immediately),” said Healy.

“Well they’ve been in denial for three years Cricket Australia, this has been coming no question.

“Our bowlers have a very, very high injury rate around the states so we’ve really got to sort out if bowling more is the option because bowling less doesn’t seem to be working.

“Where we are at the moment is right back to the mid-80s, we have no depth.”
