Darren Berry and Shane Warne have their say on Glenn Maxwell

2016-12-05T09:34+11:00

Glenn Maxwell’s criticism of Victorian and Australian teammate Matthew Wade and subsequent omission from the opening one-dayer against New Zealand could have bigger ramifications, according to Darren Berry.

The former Victorian wicketkeeper believes Maxwell’s comments make him a major chance to be overlooked for February’s test tour to India, and potentially see him on the outer of the Australian setup.

“It’s going to be hard for him to get back into the side now. I think if Glenn Maxwell had his time again he would’ve chosen a different forum,” Berry said on SEN Breakfast.

“The greater shame for me is that he’s missed out on playing because of it, they can say they played Travis Head ahead of him. You can’t tell me that Glenn Maxwell is not in the best one-day side, well I think he is.

“I get the feeling Glenn Maxwell is on the nose, and the comments he made perhaps was the tip of the iceberg and now this may cost him a trip to India in February.”

Victoria starts a day-night Sheffield Shield game today against Tasmania in Hobart and Berry believes Maxwell is better off playing in that.

“There’s no point him going there and mixing cordial in Canberra…I say Maxwell is not playing send him to the Shield,” he said.

Shane Warne says while Maxwell was obviously venting some frustration it should have been kept behind closed doors, and praised skipper Steve Smith for his handling of the situation.

“I think some of that stuff should have been private, I don’t think that really that stuff should be public, he’s obviously just venting some frustration,” he said.

“It’s good I think the way Steve Smith handled it and just dealt with it in house.

“Glenn Maxwell is a super talent and I would like to see him playing in Australian colours in all forms of the game, but as I said some of that stuff should be kept in house.

“He’s a match winner and I think he’s one of those guys that we all get frustrated with some of the shots he plays…but I think you’ve got to take the good with the bad because out of 10 games that he plays he will win you two off his own bat himself.”
