Adam Cooney on the new captaincy at Sydney and North Melbourne

2016-12-10T14:56+11:00

Former Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney says Josh Kennedy is the perfect candidate to take over the sole captaincy at the Sydney Swans, declaring it a better model than having co-captains.

The three-time Bob Skilton Medallist takes over from Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh who have shared the role for the past four seasons.

“He doesn’t need (captaincy) to go to another level,” Cooney said on SEN radio.

“I think it’s a good idea to have him as just the one captain. They’ve had the co-captains in the past few years and it’s sort of mix and match each week.

“Great that he’s at the helm leading the club, there’s no better candidate in my opinion than (Josh) Kennedy.”

Cooney foresees Kennedy as an understanding type of character, who will lead via his example on the field.

“Seems to me like he’s a little bit more of a reserved type, a lead by example type of captain,” he said.

“He was huge in the Grand Final, nearly got them over the line.

“I think he’ll be more of a captain who will lead by example and his professionalism around the club will demand high standards, all those sorts of things.

“I don’t think he’ll be too ruthless on his teammates, I think he would be a bit more of an understanding type, relationship building captain for me.”

Ziebell a real spiritual leader

Jack Ziebell has taken over the captaincy at North Melbourne, following Andrew Swallow’s decision to stand down after five years at the helm.

Cooney sees him as the logical choice, and one who is likely to demand more from his teammates.

“Logical choice for me, heart and soul type of player, real spiritual leader of the group,” he said.

“Andrew Swallow did a pretty good job, but he’s not that inspirational type leader that you see on-field.

“Jack will probably demand a little bit more out of his teammates I think.”

He believes Ziebell has become more vocal in recent years’ and has worked increasingly hard on his leadership skills.

“Early in his career he wasn’t, but he’s obviously developed that over the last few years.

“When you start playing consistently well and as hard as he is, you really gather confidence from that, and no doubt he has worked on his leadership abilities.

“He will be a great leader at North Melbourne.”
