Clemson upset Alabama to take out heart-stopping US College Football National Championship Final

2017-01-10T16:50+11:00

Clemson University have won a stunning US College Football Playoff National Championship Final, defeating heavy favourites Alabama University 35-31 after claiming the winning touchdown with one second of the match remaining.

Clemson’s victory, the first time the Tigers have won a National Championship since 1981, avenges their defeat to the same opponents in the season-ending match last year.

The South Carolina-based college were behind for most of the game, trailing 24-14 at the end of the third-quarter, with fears that their opponents would run away with the contest and win back-to-back national titles.

However Clemson’s 21-point last quarter comeback will go down in history as one of the greatest performances in US college sport history in what will be considered an all-time classic match.

After an early final quarter Tigers touchdown thrown by junior quarterback Deshaun Watson to wide receiver Mike Williams, Clemson hit the lead for the first time in the match after Wayne Gallman dived for a touchdown from one yard out to make the score 28-24 with 4:38 remaining.

The Crimson Tide hit back almost immediately, with a 30-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalen Hurts giving Alabama a 31-28 lead with just over two minutes of the game left.

However with only one second of the game remaining Watson once again struck for the Tigers, throwing a two yard pass to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow to win the national championship for his side.

Clemson’s victory hands head coach Dabo Swinney his first ever National Championship, and denied Alabama coach Nick Saban a shot at equalling legendary college football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s all-time record of six national titles.
