Moons talks the new recruits who will have the most impact in 2017

2017-01-17T12:20+11:00

Cameron Mooney has revealed who he believes will be the recruits that will have the most significant impact on their new clubs this year.

The former Geelong forward says that new Melbourne midfielder Jordan Lewis is the pick of the bunch, saying that while the former Hawk is not at his peak anymore, his effect on the Demons midfield will be huge.

“I think Jordan Lewis will have a huge impact at Melbourne,” Mooney said on SEN Breakfast.

“His leadership, his ability to control stoppages, to help (Jack) Viney and these younger guys out, to help Nathan Jones…I think he will be huge for them throughout the year.

“I don’t think he is at his absolute best anymore but the other things that he will bring to the table will be enormous.”

Fellow former Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell, who was traded to West Coast in last year’s AFL trade period, should also contribute plenty in 2017 according to Mooney.

However the three-time premiership forward says that questions remain over how quickly the 2012 Brownlow Medallist will gel with his new club.

“The only thing that maybe might go against him is that he has had teammates for a long time that knew how he played, so he could work his way around that group because he knew them so well,” said Mooney.

“Will he take 12 months to adjust to a new team or will they take 12 months to adjust to him? Is his game good enough that he can just roll into a new team and just get 35 possessions and do the things he does?”

Two new recruits that may also have a major impact are new Pie Daniel Wells and Tiger-turned-Giant Brett Deledio.

Wells has suffered from numerous injury setbacks in recent seasons, with his latest concern - a calf strain - occurring soon after he joined his new club.

While the 31-year-old’s recovery is well on track, Mooney considers his cloudy future makes his recruitment to the Magpies on a big-money three-year contract a massive risk-reward proposition.

“He’s managed 243 games over 14 seasons. It’s a lot of games but we constantly talk about Daniel Wells as being injury-prone but he has still played a lot of games,” he said.

“He was a big risk. Three years for a 31 year old who has had problems, and on a huge amount of money.

“Daniel Wells, if he is up and flying, great pickup but there is a big if. Anyone over 31 with injury problems is a question mark.”

As for the former Richmond star, Mooney says that his contribution through the midfield could be the icing on top of an already star-studded on-ball unit.

“If he can get that up and going and his body holds up, can you imagine him on the outside of (Dylan) Shiel and (Callan) Ward?” he said.

“All of these guys feeding him the ball, running through the middle of the ground to the half-forward flank, pushing up? That could be enormous for them.”
