Lack of communication disappointed Cats champs: Mooney

2017-03-25T14:55+11:00

Two-time Geelong premiership player Cameron Mooney says some Cats players felt coach Chris Scott didn’t communicate with them properly when they were at the end of their career.

It is understood that Scott didn't attend the exit interviews of Jimmy Bartel, or fellow champion veteran Corey Enright, and he admitted on K-Rock on Thursday night that he would have done some things differently regarding the departure of the 2007 Brownlow Medallist, but also said that not everything was perfect on Bartel's side either.

“I don’t think everybody accepted that their time was up,” Mooney told SEN Crunchtime.

“But what I’ll say is I don’t think a lot of them might have liked the way it was communicated to them, and in some aspects not communicated to them.

“I think a lot the guys felt that they weren’t spoken to for a period of time, just by the club and all that kind of stuff.

“You’re always going to get a little bit of bitterness at the end of a huge era, it’s not going to be perfect and Scotty said that the other day.

“There’s ways that they could do it better, and you know what there’s probably ways the players could’ve done it better, I’ve got no question about that as well.”

Mooney said he does not believe there is a campaign to undermine Scott, despite admitting there has always been discussion surrounding his communication style.

“I don’t know if there’s a huge campaign going on behind his back,” he said.

“I think there’s always been a little bit of talk about the communication side, but I don’t think players are out there to try and throw rocks and hide behind trees.

“I don’t think that’s the case at all.”

Herald Sun chief football writer Mark Robinson said it was not a good seeing the coach and ex-players squabbling, and feels it is not good for Geelong and is a battle they cannot win.

“I think it’s really awkward and unbecoming when I see coach and former players fighting,” he said.

“It’s not good and I don’t think it’s good for the club.

“I’ll be honest, the Cats know, the coach knows and the club knows who’s throwing some rocks, but the club can’t win on this one.”
