Ratings | Round 3 – Gold Coast v. Hawthorn

2017-04-09T20:00+10:00

Hawthorn's poor start to the season took another turn for the worse when it capitulated to an embarrassing a 14-goal defeat at the hands of the previously winless Gold Coast, at Metricon Stadium.

It begs the question, where to now for Alastair Clarkson's team, who are winless after three rounds and sit at the bottom of the ladder. They also don't possess a first-round draft pick this year having traded theirs to St Kilda as part of the Jaeger O'Meara deal.

Our Inside Football experts take a look at the individual performances of each player...

GOLD COAST – 21.13 (139)

Gary ABLETT – 9

Responded to criticism with a clinical display right from the get go. Booted two goals.

Michael BARLOW – 8

Racked up plenty of possessions and was workmanlike across four quarters.

Jack BOWES – 4

Did not make a major contribution, but defenssively was OK with four tackles.

Brayden FIORINI – 5

Nice return to senior footy with 18 possessions and two third quarter goals.

Aaron HALL – 8

Booted two telling goals when the pressure was on early, and gathered 29 possessions.

Jarrod HARBROW – 7

Slipped back nicely into Suns back six, and snuck forward to snag a goal.

Jesse JOYCE – 6

Solid and reliable in defence. Kept his opponents quiet and was efficient with the footy.

Kade KOLODJASHNIJ – 7

Afforded a bit more space than previous weeks and cut the Hawks apart from half back.

Sean LEMMENS – 3

Fumbled the footy a bit but never stopped trying. Booted a goal during third quarter rout.

Tom LYNCH – 7

Missed the opportunity to kick a bag (2.3). Strong hands and good work rate.

Jarryd LYONS – 7

Fantastic getting first hands at the stoppages along with 10 clearances.

Jack MARTIN – 8

Set the tone early with three first half goals. Great with his defensive pressure also.

Brandon MATERA – 9

Got reward for his effort and made the most of it; finishing with career high six goals.

Steven MAY – 6

Typically resolute display down back and marshalled the defence well.

Touk MILLER – 6

In and under the packs to dish out handball to his teammates.

Matt ROSA – 6

Quietly went about his business out on the wing, generally on his own.

Adam SAAD – 6

Set the game alight in the second quarter with a charging run out of defence. Always looking to attack.

Alex SEXTON – 6

Set up plenty of goals (4 score assists) and put the ball inside 50 seven times,

David SWALLOW – 9

Robust and strong around the stoppages and showed the Suns what they have been missing for the last 2 years.

Rory THOMPSON – 5

Did what he needed to do, spending a large part of the match on Gunston.

Jarrod WITTS – 6

Dominated the hitouts against Hawks and gave midfield a massive advantage at the stoppages.

Peter WRIGHT – 4

Failed to hit the scoreboard and just seemed to be a little off the boil.

HAWTHORN – 7.11 (53)

Kaiden BRAND – 6

Serviceable in defence and never gave up. Needed more support from senior leaders.

Luke BREUST – 1

Barely sighted and was bitterley disappointing. Is better than that.

Shaun BURGOYNE – 5

Swung into attack to try and spark Hawks but the ball hardly got down there.

Ryan BURTON – 6

Built on last week’s efforts with another solid outing. Rare bright spot.

Josh GIBSON – 5

Made accountable by the Suns and struggled to provide regular drive from defence.

Jack GUNSTON – 5

An off night with the boot (0.3). Pushed further up the ground to try and stay involved.

Ricky HENDERSON – 7

Leading possession winner for the Hawks and rebounded well out of defence.

Luke HODGE – 5

Set up a couple of good attacking thrusts, although was caught out on occassions in defence.

Will LANGFORD – 2

Went with Ablett at times and found the going tough. At the crossroads with his footy.

Ben MCEVOY – 4

Out rucked by Witts. Not a massive presence around the ground either.

Teia MILES – 2

Not a big involvement and may head back to the VFL after a taste of senior footy.

Tom MITCHELL – 7

One of few Hawks who gave his all. Gathered 27 possessions and booted a goal.

Jaeger O'MEARA – 3

Not the output he was hoping for against former club. Disposal efficiency a concern.

Paul PUOPOLO – 1

Booted a first quarter goal which was the total sum of his contribution.

Cyril RIOLI – 4

Looked dangerous when the ball was in his vicinity. The ball was not there much though.

Jarryd ROUGHEAD – 7

Tried valiantly all evening and booted three goals. Needed more support.

Liam SHIELS – 7

Led the way for Hawks in clearances (6) and worked tirelessly defensively (7 tackles).

Isaac SMITH – 4

Although got plenty of footy, his ball use was no of no use. At least made 7 tackles.

Ben STRATTON – 5

Reasonable in defence. Spoilt well and rebound was useful.

Ty VICKERY – 1

Minimal impact would be a slight overstatement. Had a deadset mare.

Brendan WHITECROSS – 3

Worked hard around the ground, though did not make a major contribution.
