Magpie star all for monster contracts

2017-04-11T16:50+10:00

Collingwood star Adam Treloar believes lengthy big money contracts are good for the game.

The star midfielder, who signed a six-year deal worth a reported $750,000 a season to join Collingwood after four seasons at GWS, is all for deals that some in the industry have suggested aren’t healthy for the game.

“I think it’s great for the game,” Treloar told SEN's The Run Home.

“It’s just the way all sports are going because you see every sport offering massive deals.

“If the player is worth it I can’t see why there is an issue.”

Treloar’s comments come on the back of North Melbourne’s bold bid to lure star Giant Josh Kelly with a nine-year deal in the range of one million dollars a season.

Despite reports GWS is confident Kelly will sign a two-year deal to remain at the club, it is believed he is more likely to be wearing Roo colours in 2018 given the GWS offer is well short of the deal tabled by North Melbourne.

Treloar said once-in-a-lifetime deals were too good to refuse given their capacity to set young men and women up for life.

“My six-year deal has given me great security and faith in the footy club for backing me,” he said.

“It sets me up for life, it allows me to help my family and set my career up.”

With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement expected to include a salary cap rise in the vicinity of 20 per cent, a number of players are playing the waiting game as they look to secure the best possible contract terms.

Already Adelaide Crows pair Jake Lever and Mitch McGovern have put contract talks on hold while a host of players, including Geelong’s Dan Menzel, have backed themselves to have big years given they will be free agents at season’s end.
