2017-04-29T22:45+10:00

With Ben Brown booting a career-high six goals, North Melbourne has registered its first win of the season with a hard-fought 13-point triumph over Gold Coast at Etihad Stadium.

Our Inside Football experts take a look at the individual performances of each player...

NORTH MELBOURNE – 16.11 (107)

Jed ANDERSON – 4

Important goal in final term and was the last of many Kangas to run with Ablett.

Shaun ATLEY – 3

Quiet apart from a couple of forays out of defence.

Ben BROWN – 8

Stood up as main target with three goals in final quarter to finish on six for the night. Terrific game to get Roos up for first win.

Ben CUNNINGTON – 3

Started on Ablett but was powerless to stop him and then didn’t particularly shine anywhere else.

Trent DUMONT – 5

Had a fair game, winning most of his possessions on the outside.

Taylor GARNER – 6

Active on half forward line and strong hands were once again an asset.

Sam GIBSON – 5

Solid game with plenty of defensive rebounds.

Todd GOLDSTEIN – 7

Big second quarter helped lift side and he got better as game progressed with his stamina and experience giving edge over Witts.

Lachie HANSEN – 5

Started in defence but made a difference when shifted to attack. Drive-by elbow on Miller a cause for concern.

Shaun HIGGINS – 8

Played as good footy as he has ever produced in his career and looked sharp and fit in the middle.

Nathan HROVAT – 7

Looks to be a real asset and one of the better pick-ups this year. Neat and effective.

Jamie MACMILLAN – 5

Solid game but ball-use could have been better . At one stage found himself in awkward match-up on taller Lynch.

Luke MCDONALD – 5

Created plenty of inside 50 entries and fired a booming goal from 55 meters.

Aaron MULLETT – 6

Defensive work was solid if unspectacular and he did his bit with the ball in his hands.

Jy SIMPKIN – 3

Looked the goods a couple of times early in the night early but didn’t win a high possession count.

Robbie TARRANT – 6

Good defensive job on potentially dangerous Wright and did all the little things well down back.

Scott THOMPSON – 7

Relished the important battle with key man Lynch and although he conceded three goals, Thompson had the edge overall.

Kayne TURNER – 5

Showed spark at times in attack and earned his keep overall.

Ed VICKERS-WILLIS – 2

Kid stuck to his task without being overly prominent.

Marley WILLIAMS – 5

Hard worker in defence and always did something positive with the ball when he won it.

Mason WOOD – 4

Began well leading up form half forward , but didn’t have a huge say in the match overall.

Jack ZIEBELL – 6

Came home strongly in last quarter and was instrumental in North producing a better finish than in past weeks.

GOLD COAST – 14.10 (94)

Gary ABLETT – 9

Did the lot including a rare high mark. Was a clearance machine in the middle and a succession of Roos couldn’t stop him.

Callum AH CHEE – 4

Had extended patches when he was quiet, but showed tenacity and attacked the contest.

Michael BARLOW – 6

Good ball-winner around the ground in first half but was quieter in the closing hour.

Jack BOWES – 5

Youngster used handball as his main option and was gritty down back.

Brayden FIORINI – 4

Young defender showed some positive flashes at times and will be persevered with.

Aaron HALL – 4

As usual tried to take on the game by running and bouncing wherever he could. Crunched in dying moments.

Jarrod HARBROW – 7

Never stopped working and using has anticipation from deep in defence and further up the field.

Jesse JOYCE – 3

Wasn’t a big factor in defence.

Sean LEMMENS – 3

Ok at times, but greater impact is required.

Jack LESLIE – 2

With key defenders out he was handed a big job on Brown and constantly trailed the big Roo to the ball.

Jesse LONERGAN – 4

Strong at the contest and no shortage of courage, but decision making needs to improve to hold down a regular spot.

Tom LYNCH – 4

Started promisingly but Thompson worked him under the ball and kept his influence within reasonable bunds.

Jarryd LYONS – 6

Good first term and a strong second half, but made a few errors at crucial times.

Jack MARTIN – 5

OK in his 50th game but didn’t hit targets as regularly as normal.

Brandon MATERA – 5

Kicked a couple of goals and kept Williams then Mullet busy, but didn’t play a major part.

Touk MILLER – 6

Even game and bounced back up after heavy knock the head from Hansen. Consistent ball winner all through.

Matt ROSA – 2

Gutsy effort to tear into oncoming path of Gibson in second quarter but was concussed and forced off for rest of game.

Adam SAAD – 4

Always tried to generate run from the backline, but didn’t get as much of the ball as Suns would have liked.

Alex SEXTON – 6

Big second quarter and was good for most of the night but faded at the end.

Matt SHAW – 3

Last minute inclusion, but didn’t play a significant part in proceedings.

Jarrod WITTS – 5

Won plenty of hits to advantage in the early stages, but Goldstein gradually wore him down and did more around the field.

Peter WRIGHT – 5

Threatened to be a danger for North, but Tarrant was effective on him. Will be a good player but needs work on defensive side.
