Ralph says sign Bucks long term

2017-05-22T19:10+10:00

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph says if Nathan Buckley survives at Collingwood it has to be on a minimum two-year deal.

The besieged Collingwood coach, who signed a one-year extension for 2017 at the start of last year, is battling to save his coaching career that hangs by a thread on the back of the Magpies’ 3-6 start.

“If he manages to coach his way out of this extraordinary situation, despite all that has befallen him, they have to give him some love with a two-year deal,” Ralph told SEN’s The Run Home.

“He can’t go through this (one year deal) again because it’s too tough on him.”

Collingwood CEO Gary Pert reiterated the club’s position recently, saying the Magpies were moving away from long term contracts and were working to sign coaches and staff do shorter term deals.

Any potential longer term deal with Buckley comes with the possibility of sizeable payout that is linked to the football department cap that last year was set at $9.6 million. Any money paid over the cap is taxed at 75 percent for every dollar.

“He knows that everyone is fascinated with his coaching future,” Ralph said.

“Who knows what will happen, they might not even beat Brisbane this weekend, but he can’t go through another one year deal.”
