"I got told of sacking by the fitness coach" says ex-Saint

2017-06-08T15:00+10:00

Former St Kilda and Brisbane player Steven Lawrence has revealed the extraordinary circumstance he found out his career at St Kilda was over.

Lawrence admitted that his passion for football had waned later on in his 120-game career, but was shocked to first learn of his sacking from the Saints fitness coach as he was about to start training after being caught drink driving – not from coach Grant Thomas.

“I had a big day on the squirt, I drove home because I was silly. You go back and reassess your life and you look at where you’re at and why you’re there,” Lawrence told SEN’s Afternoons.

“The first I heard of getting sacked was walking into the gym and one of the fitness coaches told me I wasn’t welcome here.

"...I went and reassessed my life, and thankfully I did because without that I wouldn’t have my three amazing kids.”

The son of club champion, Barry Lawrence, was disappointed but said he holds no grudges against the club and despite playing majority of his football at Brisbane – and being sacked by the Saints – he still considers himself a St Kilda person.

“I’m a Saints man. I had some great time there and I just love the place.”
