The sleeping giants in Dusty chase

2017-07-26T08:59+10:00

Tim Watson has revealed there is a pair of sleeping giants in the chase to secure Dustin Martin’s services, as the interest in the out of contract Richmond superstar ramps up.

“I keep hearing that there is an attraction that he has towards a side north of the border,” Watson said on SEN’s The Wednesday Crunch.

“There is someone up there that might suit him and his personality. Money is always the attraction. Both those Sydney teams are on the cusp of success.”

While the Swans have historically been low on salary cap space, due to big money deals to the likes of Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett, former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon suggested a way how the Swans could fit Martin into their salary cap.

“Tippet goes, Kieren Jack retires, Jarrad McVeigh retires,” he said.

“Midfield spots and wages open up. The teams you don’t hear about in these discussions are the ones you fear.”

It was reported in The Age today that the Tigers have upped their offer to one million dollars a season to Martin, who is one of the hot favourites for the 2017 Brownlow Medal. He would become the first ever player to win the Brownlow while being out of contract.
