Why North is back in Kelly mix

2017-07-25T11:16+10:00

Brian Waldron has revealed North Melbourne is well and truly back in the race for in-demand GWS midfielder Josh Kelly.

Kelly has been heavily linked to St Kilda and Carlton, with a belief the Kangaroos have fallen behind in the chase for Kelly. However, a new development means the Roos are making progress in securing his services.

“I am told North think they’re back in the mix for Kelly and Ron Joseph has had a fair reason to do with it,” Waldron said on SEN’s Hungry For Sport.

“They’re talking 1.5 million dollars a year.

“I have been adamant that North had no chance for Kelly, but they tell me North are suddenly cock-a-hoop. The name Ron Joseph has been very active in discussions with his father Phil Kelly.

“Ron didn’t leave his last role at the Roos as a director in great terms but he is a wonderful footy man. I understand he has been very active again in the assisting of the recruiting of Kelly.”

Waldron also believes if the Kangaroos finish last and get the top pick in November’s draft, it leaves Kelly’s manager Paul Connors in a sticky situation.

“If they finish last, there is a conundrum for Paul Connors,” he said.

“Paul Connors can’t let him go through to the draft to North for nothing because nothing ever happens in isolation. He will never get love from GWS if that happens.

“North could get him for nothing. If he decides to go to North, I think a deal will have to be done.”
