The next step in Carlton’s development

2017-08-04T12:00+10:00

Former Carlton coach Robert Walls has implored Brendon Bolton to implement a more expansive game style next season.

While the Blues have become a much more organised team on the defensive front, they are the lowest scoring team in the competition, averaging just 72 points a game.

“I have coached a number of bottom of the ladder teams, you just have to give your supporters something to look forward to,” Walls said on SEN's Hungry For Sport.

“I think defensively he has got them going well but I just hope that he can start to open them up a little bit and get some attacking flair going by taking a few more risks.

“I think that’s the next step. We aren’t going to see it this year but I hope we see it next year.

“Guys like Charlie Curnow, Jack Silvangi and Harry McKay getting some opportunities with the ball coming quick to them, because I think too often the Blues go backwards and sideways.”

After a promising start to the season Carlton have lost their past six matches, which has seen them slump to second last on the AFL ladder.

Walls believes the young Blues could be in for some more pain as the season draws to a close, but is adamant they are on the right track under Bolton.

“The season is too long for them, it was last year and it’s the same this year. It’s a young side and the last six or seven games there going to struggle,” he said.

“I think Brendon Bolton is doing a very good job; there’s a really good feel about the place.”

Carlton face old foe Essendon at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
