Legendary sports broadcaster, Drew Morphett, has died, aged 69.

Morphett died at his Pakenham home last night, where his wife Karen found him.

Morphett retired from his media duties last year. He worked predominately as an AFL and cricket commentator for the ABC and Channel 7. He also worked on numerous Olympic Games.

In 2014, Morphett received an Order of Australia Medal, thanks to his contribution to the broadcasting industry.

“You get wrapped up in the emotion, and you hope from beyond the microphone, you can get that emotion out there to the bloke who is driving the tractor, or in the car going to Mum’s place for Christmas,” Morphett said in an interview on This is Your Sporting Life.

Fellow broadcaster Anthony Hudson paid tribute to Morphett.

"He was a broadcaster who was composed all the time," Hudson said on SEN's Crunch Time.

"I remember calling in the old commentary box at the MCG, he did a year with me. He would use the pause. And you would panic that he stopped speaking, but that was his style…he let the crowd and the moment wash over everyone.

"He was just a beautiful voice."

Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton said Morphett was "a student of sport" and the Herald Sun's Chief Football Writer Mark Robinson said "he was always really excited to see you."

“Like everybody I’m shocked and stunned and saddened because it was only a week ago that I was at a Carlton lunch and Drew was there,” Robert Walls told Fox Sports News.

“He looked in good spirits...it’s far too young to see him go."
