Now when it comes to the Big One, we live in interesting times.

Until this time last year, footy wisdom held that the premiership was a contest in four (or three actually – nobody has won it from fourth since the present McIntyre final eight system began operating in 2000). But the Bulldogs’ triumph from seventh place was heaven-sent for the AFL, instantly doubling the premiership prospects.

Did the pre-finals bye introduced last season make such a feat possible? The sample size is small, but perhaps indeed it did.

We put all eight finalists under the microscope and our analysts NICK DAL SANTO and TERRY WALLACE have the final say on each club's premiership hopes.

DUST OFF THE SILVERWARE!
Is Richmond’s dynamo Dustin Martin the Brownlow Medal certainty that the betting markets suggest? He’s presently posted as $1.20 favourite with most bookmakers.
At the start of this season we asked our match reporters to try to read the umpires’ minds and submit their 3-2-1 votes with a view to acing our Brownlow Medal preview.
Our eight-page liftout gives you the lowdown on all the contenders.
