Lion and Giant in Carlton's sights: Waldron

2017-09-19T11:05+10:00

Brisbane Lions free agent Tom Rockliff and Greater Western Sydney small forward Devon Smith could be headed for Carlton, according to Brian Waldron.

Rockliff is a restricted free-agent and is said to be weighing up his future amid interest from a number of clubs – both in Victoria and interstate.

“You can’t be sure, but they say Rockliff will go to Carlton,” the former St Kilda chief said on SEN’s Hungry For Sport.

“Brisbane are hoping to get a decent level of compensation.”

The former skipper, who recently became a father for the first time, averaged 24 disposals a game and kicked 16 goals this season for the Lions, but has said that family will be his top priority when making a decision on his future.

Smith has long been linked with a love back to Geelong, but with the Cats focusing on bringing back Gary Ablett from Gold Coast, and now that out-of-favor Western Bulldogs forward Jake Stringer has also been linked, it leaves Smith’s future up in the air.

Waldron says that the former Geelong Falcon could wind up alongside a host of Giants ex-teammates at Ikon Park.

“It looks like he’s out of GWS,” he said.

“Because Stringer looks like Geelong is his likely club – they’ve got to move on some players to do that – I think he’ll end up at Carlton.”

Smith played 16 matches this season averaging 18 possessions, but he only kicked 15 goals and it is understood that he was left out of both of GWS’s finals matches despite being fit for selection.
