Wrong for Cats to jettison forward: Robinson

2017-09-25T14:16+10:00

Herald Sun journalist Mark Robinson believes Steven Motlop’s impending departure from Geelong is the wrong move for a club lacking line-beakers.

Despite two strong showings in finals against Sydney and Adelaide, the 26-year-old half forward will not be at the Cats next season as the club looks to clear salary cap room for the likes of Gary Ablett, Jake Stringer and Devon Smith.

“I think it’s wrong and I wouldn’t be getting rid of him” Robinson told SEN Afternoons.

“They lack players who make the opposition nervous when he gets it and Motlop can do that.”

Motlop, who is an unrestricted free agent, was paid a reported $600,000 this season in what was a bitterly disappointing year despite two strong finals showings.

The enigmatic forward has been a polarising figure at Geelong given the gap between his best and worst, and a seeming lack of effort and intensity at times.

Fellow forward Dan Menzel looks to also be on the move while the future of Rhys Stanley is up in the air after another disappointing season.

While the club has spent years topping up in search of a premiership mix, Robinson was blunt in his assessment of the playing group.

“They’re just not good enough,” he said.

Harsh assessment for a club that has sold the farm to compile the current list.
