“They are the best team unit in the AFL this year”

Chief football writer of the Adelaide Advertiser Michelangelo Rucci believes there is no better collective unit currently in the AFL than the Adelaide Crows.

The minor premiers have taken all before them this season as they look to win their first premiership since 1998.

While Richmond possess the best three players out of the two sides, Rucci says the Crows are stronger across the board and are just as good as the Tigers when it comes to team defence.

“They (Richmond) might have three of the best players but I actually think Adelaide have got the best team,” he said on Hungry for Sport.

“It’s their system of work; the way they demolished Geelong in that Preliminary Final tells you that they are the best team unit in the AFL this year.

“I’d say Adelaide defines team-defence pretty well as well.”

Don Pyke's side contain a core group proven stars within their ranks, but they also have a sprinkling of underrated competitors who have gone under the radar this season.

Rucci named three unsung heroes that Damian Hardwick and his charges should be wary of in tomorrow's Grand Final.

“Luke Brown is an amazing defender and gets no publicity and no attention. I can’t find a game where he has failed. They call him the glove because he can suffocate a forward,” he said.

“Crows fans were just horrible in the way in which they were critical of him (David McKay) at the start of the year but he has re-invented himself into a very handy role player.

“And another you might want to consider is a guy who has proven to be durable for the long distance and that is Richard Douglas. His work in being re-invented in the midfield has been sort of lost against the Crouch brothers and Rory Sloane.

“Douglas’ work this year is virtually up there with his club championship form from a few years back.”
