'What if?': Delisted ex-skipper looks back on trade fail

2017-10-03T08:30+11:00

Delisted former Melbourne captain Jack Trengove has looked back on his failed trade to Richmond in the wake of the Tigers drought-breaking flag.

The 2009 No.2 pick was set to join Richmond at the end of 2014, but failed a medical examination on his troublesome foot.

Trengove told SEN Breakfast that watching Damien Hardwick’s side romp to this year’s premiership on Saturday left him wondering ‘what if?’

“I’d had a previous surgery the year before on the navicular and was hoping that it would all be smooth sailing and I’d get back into it,” he said.

“When that opportunity arose at Richmond I went and had a medical, but unfortunately it cracked through the screws where I’d had it repaired, so I had to go through the process again.

“I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t thought about it over the weekend when I saw those boys celebrating a great victory, but everything happens for a reason.”

Trengove played 86 games over an eight-year span with Melbourne and believes that he still has something to give at AFL level.

“My old man tells me this every day that you’re a long time retired and when you’re 50 or 60 years old and can no long play footy, I don’t want to sit at that age and look back and think, ‘did I give it away too quickly?’” he said.

“In the short term I’ve got every sort of energy in my body ready to go and gear up for another crack at it.

“But it’s one of those situations where I have little control over that now and its whether a club wants to put the faith in me to go around again. I feel with a fresh environment and a new set of eyes that I can go to another level.”

Trengove said that he is physically as good as he ever has having claimed Casey Demons’ best and fairest this season averaging 23 disposals and five tackles per game.
