Is Motlop the AFL’s luckiest player?

2017-10-16T10:37+11:00

New Port Adelaide recruit Steven Motlop should be classified as one of AFL’s most lucky players after securing another sizable contract, according to The Australian’s Greg Denham.

The 26-year old signed a four-year deal to join the Power as a free agent, after Geelong declined to match the offer, believed to be over $500,000 a season.

After booting 38 goals in 2016, Motlop kicked just 22 goals from 23 games in 2017, but was impressive in the Cats' finals matches against Sydney and Adelaide.

“Is Motlop the luckiest player playing in the AFL? Fair dinkum, honestly he’s been on a really good contract with Geelong,” Denham asked on Hungry for Sport.

“He’s probably played three good games in three years (including the two finals this year), but to be on good money all this time, and to now go to Port for four years on still pretty good money, takes a lot to beat that.”

Geelong received pick 19 from the AFL as compensation for losing Motlop, a move that surprised many in the industry, with the expectataion being around pick 35.
