Tomlinson trade still alive: McClure

2017-10-16T08:10+11:00

SEN news breaker Sam McClure is reporting Adam Tomlinson is still holding out hope he will be playing football in Victoria next year and beyond.

Despite Greater Western Sydney constantly affirming the defender will respect his contract, which expires at the end of 2019, McClure believes Tomlinson being moved is still a possibility.

“That’s the point of view of Greater Western Sydney and we take Craig Cameron at his word that he will not be traded,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s not the feeling of Adam Tomlinson, who would like to return home to Victoria to play his football. While he is still committed to the Giants for another two years of his contact, he remains and holds out hope that there will be a trade that gets done this week. St Kilda also believes that a trade can happen.

“This is complicated by the fact he has two years left on a contract. He would like to be playing for a Victorian club next year, but is also very well aware that he signed a contract that keeps him at the club until the end of 2019.

“There were conversations that happened pre-finals about a return to Victoria for Adam, and the club [GWS] saying to him that if a good deal could happen, it would be exercised on the basis both parties were getting the right deal.”

The Saints have been the club most interested in Tomlinson, but it is believed their initial offer to the Giants was underwhelming.

McClure also stated Carlton were “very close” to acquiring Tomlinson two years ago, before GWS didn’t make a trade because they wanted a better draft pick in return.

The 24-year-old averaged 13.8 disposals at 77 percent efficiency this season. He was one of the Giants’ best performers in their Preliminary Final defeat to Richmond.
