Ox weighs in on the ‘Trade Month’ debate

2017-10-23T17:40+11:00

With recent speculation that AFL trade week could eventually turn into trade month between October and November, and former Melbourne star David Schwarz is not happy with the potential change.

Inside Football's Brett Anderson revealed last week that trading of players and picks live on draft night could be introduced as soon as 2018, and it has been reported trade period could be extended to cover the entire draft process.

“I don’t like it, personally," Schwarz said on SEN's The Run Home.

“We saw in the last two weeks that trades are done every seven hours for the first eight days, then on the last day we have one every 13 minutes, so if the timeline is extended out we may go 25-40 hours without a trade and we don’t need that."

The 173-gamer feels the possible extension of the AFL trade period could potentially frustrate both the AFL community and club list management departments.

“I think we can get our business sorted, we can get all the negotiating done in less time rather than more time.

“As a footy lover I don’t want to have speculation and innuendo for a month on possibilities (and we do it all year anyway), so let’s just cut it to a week,” he added.

Schwarz expressed that he would rather endure a longer draft night as a fan rather than dealing with a longer trade period leading up to draft day.

“If on draft night it takes ten minutes per pick, that’s okay. It’ll be over in nine to 10 hours. We don’t need a month and 20 hours of negotiation," he said.

The 2017 AFL draft will be hosted at the Sydney Showgrounds on the 24th of November.
