Ralphy: Melbourne will win the flag if…

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph has made a grand declaration about Melbourne’s 2018 prospects.

Despite missing the finals for the 11th straight season in 2017, the Demons’ fortunes could quickly turn if one of their most talented youngsters can elevate his game to the next level.

“My line in the sand is Christian Petracca as an A-grader,” Ralph told SEN’s Hungry For Sport.

“If Christian Petracca is an All-Australian next year, Melbourne will win the flag. If he can kick 40 goals from half forward, I don’t see where their weakness is.”

Petracca had an inconsistent 2017 campaign averaging 18.8 disposals and kicking 26 goals in 22 games. His potential is immense, but the 21-year-old tended to float in and out of contests, an element of his game that has frustrated Melbourne supporters.

The Demons had a busy offseason, trading away 2008 number one draft pick Jack Watts to Port Adelaide. However, the inclusions of star young defender Jake Lever, and Harley Balic, offset that move.

Melbourne begins their 2018 journey with an appointment against Geelong at the MCG on Sunday March 25. They have been scheduled for just one Friday night contest.
