“A shambles all around”…Stars skipper opens up

2018-01-18T12:23+11:00

Melbourne Stars captain John Hastings hasn’t held back in his assessment of the season, admitting it has been a “shambles” for the bottom-placed BBL side.

Dubbed one of the league’s glamour teams, the Stars have managed just one win from seven matches, as the talented line-up has failed to fire.

In previous years, Melbourne has been able to bounce back from poor starts, but they haven’t been able to replicate the magic this season.

Hastings says the club has failed in all elements of the game, as they attempt to look forward to Saturday night’s contest against the Sydney Thunder.

“In seasons gone past, we have had individual brilliance that we have hung our hat on, blokes scoring 100’s and people taking five wickets,” he told SEN Mornings.

“This season, we have dropped a lot of catches, and it has just been a bit of a shambles all around.

“We have been doing everything we possibly can to turn it around, but that’s T20 cricket.”

The Big Bash sells a message of enjoyment, with their bright colours and the big-hiting 20-over format.

However, Hastings has admitted losing has zapped the joy out of the club.

“It hasn’t been fun at all,” he said.

“It hasn’t been an ideal campaign at all. A lot of planning and preparation went into it, but in the end, you can plan and prepare all you like.

“We have started poorly in the past and made six semi-finals but it didn’t pan out how we liked at the start, and we haven’t been able to crawl back.

“It can go pear shaped pretty quickly.”
