How does an American living in Australia spend his Christmas night? For Mason Cox, the answer is indulging with Eddie McGuire at the Collingwood’s President’s wine cellar.
Speaking on SEN Breakfast, the Magpies big man revealed the details of how McGuire invited him into his home on Christmas, after serving the underprivileged earlier in the day.
“In the morning we went to the Glasshouse for a luncheon with the Salvation Army to hand out food to the homeless,” Cox said.
“I met up with him there and he asked me, what are you doing today? I said I’m half the world away from my family, so I’m not really doing anything.
“He said, well come over for a wine, so I was fortunate enough to be at his wine cellar, which is pretty impressive as you would imagine.
“He is nice enough for a guy of his stature, to invite me over and just sit around with his family and talk about whatever it is.”
While admitting he isn’t a wine aficionado, Cox believes it was a “2012 Napa Valley” that McGuire presented him.
The 26-year-old is poised to play a pivotal role in Collingwood’s structure this season, as he will spilt time with star Brodie Grundy in the ruck and forward line.
Last year, Cox averaged 7.8 disposals and 16.1 hitouts per game, while booting 10 goals, after kicking 17 in 2016.
