Kreuzer anticipates young Blues to attack in 2018

2018-02-01T10:49+11:00

Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer expects the Blues to showcase a more attacking style of football this season, as they look to grow on the defensive foundations they’ve laid under Brendon Bolton’s rebuild.

The Blues finished last in scoring in 2017 and haven’t eclipsed the 100-point mark since Round 11, 2016.

Despite the poor numbers, Kreuzer, who is a member of Carlton’s eight-man leadership group, believes the club now has the personnel to start hitting the scoreboard on a more consistent basis.

"We're working on our attacking style a little bit," he told SEN Breakfast.

"The last couple of years we've been good on our defence but we haven't been scoring enough, so we're just trying to find ways to tinker with that.

"I think we've got the players there to do that."

Captain Marc Murphy is also excited for the Blues’ forward prospects, which is set to be spearheaded by tantalising youngster Charlie Curnow.

“It’s no surprise we are trying to bring some more attacking flair into our game,” he said.

“We have got some guys who have been training really well who have got a lot of talent in our forward line.

“We look forward to seeing what those guys can do and want to add another string to our bow to what we have worked hard on the last couple of years, which is strengthening up some of our attacking play.

“He (Curnow) can play deep forward or high forward or go through the midfield or run around on a wing.

“He has been training really well and I think we will see him all over the ground, he has certainly got the tank.”

Kreuzer, who was the club’s number one draft pick in 2007, is eager to begin his new duties as a leadership group member, especially with the slew of young talent the club has at its disposal.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

"It is very exciting to sit back at training and look at all the young kids getting around.

“The tricks they've got these days are pretty impressive.

"The good thing is we've got a good balance of players with Charlie and Harry McKay up forward, Sam Petrevski-Seton in the middle, and Paddy Dow and Lochie O'Brien this year are going to really help us too."
