Watts: Why I chose the Power

New Port Adelaide recruit Jack Watts has opened up on why he decided to pick the Power ahead of Geelong and Sydney in last year’s trade period.

Watts, speaking publicly for the first time this year, says that everything about a move to South Australia made sense for him at this stage of his career.

“The reason I chose Port was to probably get the best out of my football and that was the place I thought I’d enjoy my football the most… I just couldn’t fault Port Adelaide at all,” the 26-year-old forward told SEN’s Time On with Sam McClure.

“It probably would have made a lot more sense to stay in Victoria and Geelong is obviously an incredible club, but I just couldn’t say no I guess.

“Everything made sense… I haven’t looked back since.”

Watts admitted that a changed relationship with Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin last season impacted on his decision.

“When he was an assistant coach, I was working with him every single day,” the former Demon said.

“We got along like a house on fire. It’s probably just that next year that he took over the coaching role, it’s obviously very hard for a head coach to have that sort of relationship with 46 different players.”

The 2008 number one draft pick also revealed that former coach at the Dees Paul Roos advised him to select the Power as his second club.

“I stayed in pretty constant contact with Roosy,” said Watts.

“Leading into the decision, I was actually speaking with him a fair bit weighing up our options. He thought the same as I did and thought Port Adelaide would be a great move.”

Watts is confident he will be used in a forward-sitting role at his new club in 2018.

“I think that is where they see me and where I have been training all pre-season,” he said.

“I’m feeling really comfortable with it.”

The Power kick off their 2018 season at home against Fremantle on Saturday March 24.
