Former Australian captain lauds Maxwell’s approach

2018-02-02T11:28+11:00

Australian T20 assistant coach Ricky Ponting has praised Glenn Maxwell for the mature way he handled his one-day international axing.

He scored 299 runs from nine matches for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash, with the Channel 10 commentator describing his tournament as “consistent”.

“I was pretty impressive with the way he handled things, having been left out of the one-day team in the back half of the summer,” Ponting told SEN Breakfast.

“I thought the way he approached his cricket in the Big Bash was really good, he had a consistent Big Bash and hopefully he can take it into the IPL in a few month’s time.”

The former Australian captain has already had success in the IPL, coaching the Mumbai Indians to the title in 2015.

The season he has succeeded Paddy Upton at the helm of the Delhi Daredevils, who signed Maxwell in the recent IPL auction for $1.75 million.

Ponting says he has given the 29-year-old a “loud and clear message” about the role expected from him when the tournament begins in April.

“I’ve picked up Glenn Maxwell in the auction. He wasn’t a Delhi player before the other day,” he said.

“I’ve picked him up, spent a bit of money on him and we’ve had a good chat already about what my expectations are for him, and how I need him to play and what I want him to be able to bring to the team.

“He’s got the message loud and clear.”

The Aussies begin the T20 tri-series tomorrow at the SCG against New Zealand.
