The circumstance that would make Lyon sack De Goey

2018-02-19T08:27+11:00

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says Jordan De Goey should be sacked, if a stern chat with the Millane family doesn’t change his behaviour.

De Goey was caught drink-driving on Saturday night, recording a blood alcohol level of 0.095. He has had his licence suspended for six months, and will meet with Collingwood officials today to determine his sanction.

It is expected De Goey’s punishment from the club will be a hefty one, as it isn’t the first time he has found himself in hot water.

The Magpies endured heartbreak with drink driving in 1991, when 1990 premiership hero Darren Millane was killed while driving with alcohol in his system. Millane had a blood alcohol reading of 0.322, almost six and a half times over the legal limit.

Lyon believes if De Goey spoke to the Millane family about the incident, and then goes on to have another indiscretion, he must be sacked.

“Get him to sit down with the Millane family,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“I’m sure they would do that, and if that doesn’t have a profound affect on him, I would sack him.

“If sitting down with the Millane family to talk through that whole circumstance, and if he didn’t walk away a changed man, I would sack him.”

Last offseason, De Goey lied to the club about the cause of his broken hand.

The 21-year-old originally said it occured while playing with his dog, before it was revealed he suffered the injury in a bar fight.

Three-time premiership player Tim Watson believes the star Pie has to realise how big of a misdemeanour drink driving is, and how damaging it can be.

“He (De Goey) needs to win back the respect of the players,” he said.

“The other thing I would do, because of the seriousness of what he did, I would make him, in his own time, go and visit people who have been affected by people that have been in cars driving with a blood alcohol reading, and what affect it has on people.

“Get him to understand what all that meant, apart from the fact that he will be penalised with his footy. There is this other thing that he needs to understand, and that’s the damage it can cause with being on the roads with a blood alcohol reading.”
