Alastair Clarkson’s decision to ponder his future was a curious one, according to three-time premiership player Tim Watson.
In an interview with AFL.com.au, the legendary Hawthorn coach said “baby steps” would need to be taken towards a new deal. Clarkson is out of contract at the end of 2019, and didn’t pledge his allegiance to the Hawks beyond that point.
Considering we haven’t heard the four-time premiership coach express these feelings before, Watson is of the notion the comments were particularly interesting.
“It is not something we have heard from him before, so it is curious that he would put that out there if that is what he is thinking,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“If he were to come out of contract next year, there will be an enormous amount of interest in him.”
Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon reckons the return of Jeff Kennett has also played a part in Clarkson’s statement, as the President’s stance on individuals staying in powerful positions long-term is well known.
“Knowing Jeff’s attitude towards set tenures, particularly for board members and himself as a chairman, I think your mind goes, ‘he is back and in charge, I’ve been here for 15 years, I have to ask myself these questions,’” he said.
“Jeff has indicated that he wants to extend him, which goes against his own philosophies, but I think it would be a set off in your brain to say, it is time to think about these questions.”
Clarkson has coached the Hawks since 2005, winning 190 matches from 305 games.
