Gaz urges Crows to stick with Tex

2018-02-21T09:06+11:00

Despite questions surrounding Taylor Walker’s captaincy at Adelaide and whether he is the right man for the job, Garry Lyon has urged the Crows to keep the big forward at the helm.

Coach Don Pyke yesterday bristled at questions from the media that star midfielder Rory Sloane could be offered the captaincy in an attempt to try and keep him at the club.

The former Melbourne captain said while Walker didn’t necessarily cover himself in much glory during, or in the aftermath, of the Crows' Grand Final defeat to Richmond, the club shouldn’t change what made them successful during 2017.

“I wouldn’t (make a change),” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“I don’t think Tex had his greatest year. He certainly didn’t have his greatest moment in the Grand Final on-field, nor in the ensuing weeks with the (Jake) Lever stuff off-field.

“Adelaide were enormously successful through the course of the year. You back in your system that had Tex named as their leader and I’d go with him again.”

Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes said yesterday Sloane would be the better skipper than Walker.

The 27-year-old has been Crows skipper since 2015, and has been twice named as the best captain by the AFL Players Association in 2016 and 2017.
