“Sloane’s a better leader”: Cornes stings Walker captaincy

2018-02-20T19:00+11:00

Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes has criticised Adelaide skipper Taylor Walker’s leadership, believing fellow Crows star Rory Sloane is a better choice for captain of the club.

The Adelaide captaincy has once again hit the news, with rumours circulating that the Crows may be willing to hand Sloane the captaincy in a bid to keep the in-demand midfielder at the club, with a number of Melbourne clubs ready to pounce on the soon to be free agent should he decide to return home.

Cornes says that if given a choice, he would pick Sloane as skipper over the key forward solely based on the way they play.

“My criticism over Tex’s captaincy is that he gets caught up in too much off the ball stuff,” Cornes told SEN’s Time On with Sam McCure.

“He’s very boisterous off the ball, tries to throw his weight around and push and shove in the face of the opposition. “Rory Sloane leads by example. When the footy is there to be won, he puts his head over it.

“I’m not saying Taylor Walker is not courageous, but in terms of the way Rory Sloane leads on the field, he’s a better leader.”

However the former Power on-baller admits that Walker remains a popular choice within the club to lead the Crows.

“Anyone you speak to that’s inside the four walls at the Adelaide footy club say Tex is the man,” said Cornes.

“He’s the one the players listen to, he’s got the best balance of off the field, on the field. The way that he leads the players, his influence over the playing group is bigger than anyone’s.

“I guess that’s why they vote for him to be captain.”

Crows coach Don Pyke today dismissed the rumours surrounding Sloane, holding firm that they will not use the captaincy to keep players at the club.
