“Watch out for this kid”: Derm talks up Crows rookie

Five-time Hawthorn premiership player Dermott Brereton says he was highly impressed by the impact of first-year Crow Lachlan Murphy in Adelaide’s JLT Community Series win on the weekend.

The 19-year-old, selected by the Crows with the second last pick in last year’s AFL Rookie Draft, kicked a game-high three goals alongside in Adelaide’s 10 point win over Fremantle in Strathalbyn yesterday.

The performance from the former SANFL player has him earmarked for a surprise season according to Brereton.

“He just looked comfortable,” he told SEN’s KB and the Doc.

“He had good pace, buzzed around, crumbed very well, tackled very well and looked ready-made for it.

Adelaide have unearthed a number of hidden gems from the rookie draft to play in key roles in their current squad, including Hugh Greenwood (pick 48, 2015 rookie draft), Jake Kelly (pick 40, 2014 rookie draft) and Rory Laird (pick 5, 2011 rookie draft).

The Crows take on Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday March 10 in their final pre-season hit-out, before opening their 2018 campaign against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Friday March 23.
