Lyon: Tasmanian football needs a public leader

2018-03-15T07:41+11:00

Former Melbourne champion Garry Lyon believes Tasmanian football needs a face to lead the charge in the bid to getting an AFL side.

Tasmanian football has gone through a turbulent time and Lyon believes former Richmond superstar Matthew Richardson is the perfect person to be the face of the cause.

“The push for Tasmanian football is in desperate need of a figure head,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“There are few more charismatic people in football than Matthew Richardson, his bona fides are beyond dispute and he is the face of Tasmanian football.”

Richardson, born in Devonport, has been a strong advocatae for Tasmanian football over the past few years.

The Richmond champion has declared Tassie fans would love their own team.

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson urged Richardson to have a more active role.

“If he really believes that, he’s got to leave the charge,” Watson said on SEN Breakfast.

“He’s got to get out the front, he’s got to mobilize the Tasmanians out there and he has to be at the forefront.”
