AFL club theme songs set to change

2018-03-16T15:00+11:00

The AFL have re-recorded every club theme song ahead of the 2018 season, and Rohan Connolly is not impressed by the change.

The League have directed clubs to play new recordings of their club songs instead of their current versions – which for most Victorian clubs date back over 40 years when last recorded by legendary band The Fable Singers.

Connolly says he is staggered by the AFL’s decision.

“The dulcet tones of The Fable Singers, they are AFL club theme songs,” he said on SEN Afternons.

“We don’t want that (change), we want tradition.

“The Fable Singers, those fantastic staples of football theme songs, will no longer be heard.

“I’m just staggered by this. Why AFL, why? Is no tradition sacred in our game anymore?

“If they are prepared to shaft The Fable Singers, there is no tradition left in the game. A night Grand Final is just a stroke of the pen away. You touch The Fable Singers and you disrupt the fabric of our very game.

“If it’s some sort of ham-fisted attempt to engage the audience, well I’ve given you the tip guys. It’s not a great way to start, throwing out the traditional club theme songs.”

The alterations to each song are believed to be mostly minor, with no major differences in tune or lyrics compared to the older recordings.
