AFLW Grand Final time an “injustice” says Lyon

2018-03-20T08:54+11:00

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon has slammed the AFL’s decision to play the AFLW Grand Final on Saturday afternoon, saying the contest deserves its own platform.

For the second straight season, the AFLW decider has been scheduled in the middle of round one, but Lyon is of the notion the game would have been better off in the spotlight of a men’s footy-free weekend.

“This is an injustice to the women,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“To just slot it in-between something, so they can get it in before the men start.

“Last week it should have been on Saturday night, bells and whistles, fireworks, the whole box and dice.”

The AFL announced yesterday the time of the Grand Final between the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions had been moved to 12:35pm AEDT. The match will be played at Ikon Park.

The new timeslot was made with the Lions’ AFL season opener with St Kilda in mind, as those two clubs battle at Etihad Stadium at 3:35pm AEDT.
