Plough outlines why Demons lost

2018-03-26T18:53+11:00

Former Western Bulldogs and Richmond coach Terry Wallace has highlighted why Melbourne lost to Geelong on the weekend.

Max Gawn missed a set shot in the dying moments that would have won the Demons the match, but the three-time premiership player thinks it shouldn’t have came down to that moment.

“I think Melbourne could have won the game by three or four goals, and not waited for the Max Gawn kick,” Wallace told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“The top-three possession winners for Melbourne don’t kick the ball enough.

“They over hand pass the ball and don’t kick it enough.

“When you compare them to the top three of Geelong, it’s out of whack.

“Nathan Jones had 29 but 10 kicks. Clayton Oliver had 28 and only nine kicks. Jordan Lewis is in the side to set them up with his kicking, had 24 possessions with only six kicks.

“Their three top players kicked the ball 30 percent of the time they got it.

“Geelong’s top-three, Joel Selwood had 39 with 17 kicks. Gary Ablett had 39 possessions, 22 kicks. Mitch Duncan had 26 possessions, 15 kicks. That is 52 percent of the time.”

In total, the Dees kicked the footy 185 times on the weekend, compared to the 220 the Cats recorded.

Melbourne will look to bounce back this Saturday night at the Gabba against the Brisbane Lions.
