Disgraced Australian batsman David Warner has apologised for his part in the ball-tampering scandal, which has seen him, deposed captain Steve Smith and young batsman Cameron Bancroft sent home and suspended.

Warner and Smith have been given 12 month suspensions, with the former Vice-captain named by Cricket Australia as the mastermind of the plan to alter the condition of the ball with sandpaper.

The trio are currently en route from Johannesburg, and are expected to arrive back in Australia this evening.

“I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it,” Warner posted on Twitter.

“I understand the distress this has caused the sport and it’s fans.”
