Plough: Sydney need to ‘trick up’ midfield to solve big game issues

2018-04-02T14:55+10:00

Terry Wallace feels there are a few issues hindering the Sydney Swans.

Rated by many as the premiership favourites ahead of the 2018 season, the Swans were tested by the West Coast Eagles in Round 1 before eventually coming away with a tough win.

In Round 2 on Sunday, the Swans faltered at home to Port Adelaide prompting Wallace to suggest that perhaps there is a slight cause for concern.

“I thought the way they performed over the summer, they were set and ready to go, I expected them to win,” he said on AFL Nation’s pre-game show.

“My concerns are over the last couple of seasons, when they’ve got to the big games at the MCG, they’ve struggled.

“Their record at the MCG of late is very ordinary.”

The Hawthorn champion also believes the star-studded Swans midfield of Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, Kieren Jack and Dan Hannebery requires some assistance in the form of youthful exuberance.

“They play a very predictable brand,” he added.

“Along with that predictable brand, that group of midfielders who work their guts out, week in, week out for 22 weeks of the year, they grow worn out by finals time.

“Luke Parker is the perfect example. His MCG record and in big games is not great.

“I just thought this year, (John) Longmire needed to trick it up a little bit, throw a few more players through the middle of the ground.

“You’ve got two young gun stars who they could introduce more often - Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills in particular.

“Heeney is the one. They both can be used and executed through there (the middle). Both of them through the junior ranks played through there.

“They are playing Heeney as a quasi-Centre-Half-Forward. He’s done a great job but I just think they need to be more flexible through the middle of the ground.”

The Swans will need to be at the top of their game if they are to bounce back against GWS at the SCG in Round 3 on Saturday, April 7.
