Be patient with Lever says Lewis

2018-04-04T08:28+10:00

Melbourne veteran Jordan Lewis has urged supporters to be patient with recruit Jake Lever, after the defender's slow start with his new club.

Lever was one of the highest profile acquisitions in last year’s trade period, with many believing he would be one of the key pieces in launching the Demons into the finals for the first time since 2006.

However, he has recorded just 10 disposals and 13 disposals in the season’s opening two games, respectively, while amassing four intercept possessions in both.

Despite the small numbers, Lewis says there is no need to panic about his form.

“People rush to try and judge someone,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We've got to have patience. He has come to a new club, he is playing in a backline, and backlines are hard to gel these days.

“You need to play together for a long period of time. He is going to be a superstar, he was nearly an All-Australian last year.

“He is two games in, so just be patient.”

Lewis also believes Lever won’t succumb to the pressures of being a big money recruit.

“His first half on the weekend was outstanding,” he said.

“It was back to the Jake Lever we have seen in Adelaide, so he was probably disappointed in the second half and how it unfolded, but he wasn’t the only one, there were a few of us in that boat.

“He is going to be a terrific player for us for a long period of time.”

Melbourne will look to improve to 2-1 this Saturday afternoon against North Melbourne at the MCG.
