Push for best of three AFL Grand Final coming soon: Sheahan

2018-04-06T08:22+10:00

Legendary AFL journalist Mike Sheahan says there will be a “push soon” from high-powered non-Victorian officials for a best of three AFL Grand Final series.

The idea has been brought up, after consideration surrounding the travel factor interstate teams have to deal with.

“I believe that there will be a push soon for a best of three Grand Final series to minimise the disadvantage that the non-Victorian teams suffer,” Sheahan told SEN Breakfast.

“Given the commission has a strong non-Victorian participation, including a WA chairman, I wouldn’t be at all surprised in my limited lifetime that we see a best of three Grand Final.”

Sheahan says the idea is supported from interstate teams, and if they work together, a strong case could be pushed forward.

“There is a high-powered official from a non-Victorian club who believes in it,” he said.

“If the non-Victorian clubs work together as a block, that’s six of them. That’s a strong force.”

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon is of the view the Grand Final should be shared around, and not always played at the MCG.
