'Do yourself a favour: Hire Lenny Hayes as coach'

2018-04-10T18:35+10:00

Legendary music personality and St Kilda tragic Molly Meldrum has called on the Saints to replace Alan Richardson as coach with club legend Lenny Hayes.

The fifth-year-coach has copped plenty of criticism over the club’s last two performances, a listless 52-point defeat to North Melbourne on Good Friday, and a 49-point loss to Adelaide, despite managing three more inside 50’s.

Richardson received a two-year contract extension before the start of the season, but with the club having failed to make finals since 2011, Meldrum feels the Saints need some of their favourite sons to return and revitalise the club.

“I’ve said for ages that the one I think should be the coach of St Kilda, bring the Saints back is Lenny Hayes,” Meldrum said on SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“He’s had massive experience now as coach of GWS being an assistant coach there (since 2015).

“We’ve gone through so much bleeding, it’s time to do it. Lenny Hayes would be unbelievable there now, with Nick Dal Santo assisting him.”

Meldrum says the club is in desperate need of an immediate shakeup, and revealed he has painted a mural of his wish on the front fence of his house.

“It just needs a bit of a shakeup down there. I’m hoping it will happen soon,” he said.

“How low can we get? There’s no direction there.

“I think we will lose a lot more members. Even the attendance figures have even got the AFL worried, it keeps dropping and dropping.”

Sitting with a 1-2 record, the St Kilda faces a difficult month ahead with matches against Geelong, Greater Western Sydney, Hawthorn and Melbourne.
