Former St Kilda coach Malcolm Blight believes there are serious issues at the Saints right now.
“They’re not much good, sorry,” Blight told SEN’s Whateley.
“The biggest hole has been Riewoldt, he carried that team for 10-12 years, he was just a freak.
“Montagna was a good mop up for him too so they’ve lost two key players.”
Blight is worried in particular about the St Kilda forward line and how the likes of Josh Bruce and Paddy McCartin have coped without Riewoldt.
“When he was there, they were getting second and third defenders, now they’re getting first defenders – it makes a hell of a difference,” Blight said.
“Sadly, I don’t care who you’ve got, you’re not going to replace Riewoldt overnight, so their forward line needs a fair bit of help.”
McCartin has struggled so far this season and hasn’t yet reached his potential as a former number one draft pick and Blight knows what he would do with him.
“You play him and you tell him you’ve got four weeks,” Blight said.
“You’ve got four weeks in the side, don’t worry about it, I’m just going to let you go out and enjoy it and I reckon that worked 50 per cent of the time.
“If that doesn’t work, you’ve got to go back to the two’s and I’ve always found with everybody – everybody that’s ever played the game – if you put them behind the ball for a week, whether it’s half back or centre half back, just let them chase the footy.”
The Saints take on Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday afternoon in what will be a very difficult challenge.
